Bansuri: Catherine Potter
Original version appears on Essence
This song is very special because of the amazing bansuri performance by the late Catherine Potter. A leading disciple of the globally renowned Hariprasad Chaurasia, she was his principal student for more than two decades, specializing in classical Indian raga on bamboo flute. I met Catherine in Montreal and we became good friends. During one trip there, I hired her to play bansuri on four of my compositions; this was one of them. This song began with a bassline from the infamous Sir Bassa on Salt Spring Island, where I attended dub school from 1999-2001. Recorded at my friend Vincent Lettelier’s (Freeworm) studio in Montreal, the haunting beauty of Catherine’s bansuri bimpolasi raga really touches me deeply. For the rework, I basically dropped just about all the parts from the song except for Catherine’s bansuri, thus creating a new frame around the original to showcase different facets of the raga.
